SUSU scientists analyze the work process in the coronavirus pandemic

Remote work will not be remembered after the coronavirus pandemic ends. Scientists from South Urals State University (SUSU) have found out that traditional countries like Japan are also adopting a new work process and are now working on building a team culture. The results were released in the International Journal of Entrepreneurship.

In the spring of 2020, the coronavirus pandemic began and almost all companies in the world were reluctant to accept remote work. A year and a half later, specialists can draw conclusions about the effectiveness of teleworking. Research group headed by SUSU Professor Mirjana Radović-Marković stated that, according to World Bank data and research literature, there are no negative changes in the work process.

Up to 77% of people feel more productive working from home compared to working in an outdoor office. They have a flexible schedule and a comfortable place to work wherever they want. However, especially in the eastern countries, employees are initially confronted with mistrust on the part of their employers.

“Before COVID-19, many employers were reluctant to accept remote work because of the expected challenges in terms of work organization and employee performance monitoring. They lacked trust in their employees. The new reality brought about by the advent of the pandemic has influenced the gradual change in such profound ideas that have been collectively cultivated over generations. “ says Mirjana Radović-Marković, professor of entrepreneurship, School of Economics and Management, SUSU.

In Japan, for example, around 88% of large companies have introduced teleworking and expect to continue doing so after the pandemic. In western countries like Serbia or other western Balkan states, people rely on personal achievements, innovations, autonomy and individual heroes, so a large number of employees accept remote work relatively well. Scientists see working from home as a future trend.

“Home office is picking up speed, there are many other reasons why home office is a future trend. The rise in real estate prices makes it impossible for even large corporations to open offices in multiple locations. Home office avoids such investments. Accordingly, this trend is expected to continue after the end of the pandemic. This is confirmed by statistics from European countries and developing countries. “ continues Mirjana Radović-Marković.

Many employers expected challenges related to work organization and control of employee performance. These days, high-performing teams have regular morning and evening video calls, which keeps them in constant communication. In addition, remote work has imposed a clear division of roles, which increases team productivity. Accordingly, most people can be trusted to work remotely in a disciplined and responsible manner.

Scientists say the results or research can be used to build resilience in companies on the one hand, and to help countries reform education and adapt workers’ skills to teleworking needs on the other.

Further research relates to changes in management and leadership style triggered by the pandemic.
